Roof Maintenance

A roof that asks for very little, twice a year

Aluminium takes rust off the maintenance list entirely. What is left is drainage, fixings and keeping debris off the sheet, an hour before the rains and an hour after is usually the whole job.

01

Before the monsoon

  • Clear gutters, valleys and downpipes of leaves and silt
  • Check that all fixings are seated and washers intact
  • Look over ridge and eaves flashings for lifted edges
  • Cut back anything overhanging the roofline
02

After the monsoon

  • Walk the roof for standing water or debris caught at laps
  • Rinse coastal and industrial roofs with plain water
  • Check the underside for any sign of water tracking in
  • Note and fix small damage before the dry season
03

Once a year

  • Book a professional inspection of fixings and flashings
  • Confirm roof-space ventilation is clear and working
  • Photograph the roof so changes are easy to spot next time
  • Keep the record, it matters for a warranty claim

Looking after an aluminium roof

An aluminium roof asks very little of you. What it does ask for is mostly about drainage, fixings and staying off the ribs.

Do these

  • Look over it twice a year, Walk the roof before and after the monsoon. You are looking for lifted laps, fixings that have backed out, and anything that has shifted.
  • Keep the water moving, Clear leaves and silt from gutters and valleys ahead of the rains. Water that cannot leave the roof will find its own way off it.
  • Cut back what overhangs, Branches that whip against a roof in a storm scratch the coating and drop debris into the drainage path all year.
  • Get a professional eye annually, Someone who inspects roofs daily will spot in ten minutes what would take you a full season to notice.
  • Deal with small things while they are small, One loose fastener is a morning of work. Left through a monsoon it becomes a section.

Don'ts

  • Skip the pressure washer, High pressure drives water under the laps and strips protective coating. Plain water and a soft brush does the job.
  • Stay off the ribs, The ribs carry the sheet’s strength. Step between them on the flat, or use crawl boards, a dent in a rib does not come out.
  • Do not block the ventilation, Trapped moisture in the roof space turns into mould and rot regardless of what the roof itself is made from.
  • Do not improvise the fixings, Fastening patterns and accessories are specified for a reason, and substituting them is the most common way a warranty is lost.
  • Leave the complicated repairs alone, Minor fixes are fine. Anything structural, or anything that means cutting an installed sheet, belongs with someone who does it for a living.

Quick FAQs

The questions we get asked most

Galvanised iron relies on a zinc coating only microns thick. In coastal humidity and sustained rainfall that layer wears through, the iron beneath begins to rust, and the roof starts leaking, often within a handful of seasons. There is no iron in an AluShade sheet for rust to take hold in, so heavy rain and salt air simply do not start that clock.

It works the other way round. Thin, dark roofing soaks up solar heat and radiates it down into the rooms below. Aluminium is highly reflective, so the bulk of that heat is turned away before it reaches the structure at all. Interiors stay cooler and cooling systems do less work.

Manufacturing defects and structural integrity, rust included. Because the sheet is made on our own line rather than bought in and profiled, we can stand behind it: under normal atmospheric conditions your roof will not rust, perforate or fail.

Twice a year is plenty for most buildings — once before the monsoon and once after it. You are checking that gutters and valleys are clear and that fixings are still seated, not hunting for corrosion, because there is none to find.

Yes, but tread on the flat of the trough where a purlin supports the sheet, never on the crown of a rib. On the thinner gauges, spreading your weight across a plank is better again.

The finish is a Super Durable Modified Polyester baked onto the coil rather than paint sprayed onto a formed sheet, so it holds colour far longer than a painted roof. Some softening of tone after many years of direct sun is normal for any coating.

A single sheet can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the runs either side, which is a practical advantage of a screwed profile over interlocking tile. Order a couple of spare lengths with the job and keep them flat and dry.

Treat it as you would any metal roof and follow your electrical consultant’s direction for the building. Aluminium conducts, so it has to be bonded into the building’s earthing arrangement wherever the code calls for it.

Often yes, given a sound structure underneath and the right battens or purlins. At roughly a third the weight of coated steel, overlaying rarely creates a load problem — but have the existing frame assessed before committing to it.
